What Is Proof of Delivery, and Why Does It Matter?
The record that confirms a job is actually done.
Proof of delivery is the record created at the moment a delivery is completed — typically a timestamp, a status update, and often a photo or signature confirming the item reached its destination. It sounds like a small detail, but it’s one of the most important pieces of data in any delivery operation.
For businesses, proof of delivery answers a simple but important question after the fact: did this order actually arrive? Without it, disputes about missing or late deliveries are harder to resolve. With it, both the business and the customer have a shared record to refer back to.
For drivers, proof of delivery closes out a job cleanly. It confirms the work was completed as expected and removes ambiguity about whether a stop was finished.
In practice, proof of delivery is usually captured through a mobile app at the moment of drop-off — a photo of the item at the door, a customer signature, or a confirmation code, depending on the type of delivery. That data flows back into a dispatch and tracking system, where it’s available for both operational review and customer service.
As a small piece of technology, proof of delivery does a lot of quiet work: it’s the foundation of accountability in any delivery network, whether that network is nine drivers or nine hundred.
